The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has equipped the Rivers State Police Command with communication gadgets to bolster efforts in combating crime and enhancing security across the state. The commission also pledged continued support to strengthen the command’s operational efficiency.

During a handover ceremony at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, emphasized the importance of collaboration between the agency and security forces in the Niger Delta region. He noted that the donation was in response to a request made under the leadership of the former Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, to improve operational capabilities and maintain peace in the state.

“As we always say, without security, there is no peace, and where there is no peace, development cannot occur. As an interventionist agency, we must support the security agencies to maintain peace in the region, ensuring access to development,” Ogbuku said.

Commending the police for their dedication, particularly during the challenging “ember months,” he added, “From September to now, we have not witnessed the usual crime surge. This is a testament to the dedication of the police, especially during a time traditionally associated with high crime.”

Ogbuku further revealed plans to extend similar support to other police commands in the Niger Delta and announced the provision of Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras to enhance security operations, as previously done for the Department of State Services. He stressed the importance of greater collaboration and intelligence sharing among security agencies.

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Mohammed, represented by Deputy Commissioner Samuel Erale, expressed gratitude for the donation. He highlighted the transformative impact of the gadgets, stating, “The provision of this equipment has given us 80% coverage of communication across the state. It has made it much easier for us to coordinate and monitor crime.” Mohammed also acknowledged past contributions by the NDDC, including residential quarters, barracks, and vehicles for senior officers.

Olatunji Disu, the former Commissioner of Police, joined the ceremony via Zoom to thank the NDDC for its continued support. He remarked, “What you have done for us today will never be forgotten because communication is key in policing. We came to you with our problems, and you responded.”

The donated equipment includes repeaters, base sets, walkie-talkies, and a rehabilitated mast, all aimed at enhancing the command’s communication and surveillance capabilities.
