His remarkable achievements have earned him recognition on the global stage, with Lookman ranking 14th in the 2024 Ballon d’Or standings.

A Historic Achievement

In May, Lookman made history by becoming the first player to score a hat-trick in a UEFA Europa League final, as Atalanta stunned Bayer Leverkusen 3-0, ending the Bundesliga champions’ 51-match unbeaten run in all competitions.

A Humble Winner

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Lookman dedicated the African Player of the Year award to his teammates, family, and the fans who have supported him throughout his career. His humility and gratitude only add to his reputation as a talented and dedicated footballer.

Lookman Edges Out Fierce Competition

To win the coveted award, Lookman edged out fierce competition from some of Africa’s top footballers, including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Ivory Coast’s Simon Adingra, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy, and South Africa goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.

What lookman’s Win Means For Nigeria

Nigeria has achieved a significant milestone in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Men’s Player of the Year awards, surpassing Côte d’Ivoire as the country with the most wins. This feat was made possible by Ademola Lookman’s emergence as the 2024 African Player of the Year, an honor he received at the prestigious 2024 CAF Awards held in Marrakesh, Morocco.

With Lookman’s win, Nigeria has now claimed the CAF Player of the Year award a record seven times. This achievement is a testament to the country’s rich football talent and its contributions to the sport in Africa.

Notably, Nigeria is the only country to have won the CAF Player of the Year award in consecutive years on three separate occasions, with different players achieving this feat. This remarkable record underscores Nigeria’s consistency in producing top-class footballers who excel on the continental stage.

Côte d’Ivoire, which previously held the record, has won the award six times, with Yaya Touré claiming the honor four times and Didier Drogba winning it twice. Cameroon follows closely, with five wins, including four awards won by Samuel Eto’o and one by Patrick Mboma. Senegal has also had its share of success, with three wins, courtesy of El Hadji Diouf’s two awards and Sadio Mané’s one award.

Other countries that have produced CAF Player of the Year winners include Ghana, Morocco, Mali, Liberia, Algeria, and Togo, each with one win. These individual achievements demonstrate the diversity of football talent across the African continent.
