The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence concluded on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, with a call for sustained efforts to combat violence against women.

Michael Lenee Gbarale, Executive Director of the Rainbow Watch and Development Centre, in a speech to mark the end of the Activism Week in Port Harcourt, emphasized the importance of sustained efforts beyond the global campaign.

Gbarale highlighted the urgent need to address gender-based violence as a societal menace, noting that its impact transcends personal boundaries, affecting individuals of all ages, races, and economic statuses.

He described the ripple effects of such violence on families and communities, emphasizing that ending it requires collective action.

Reflecting on the campaign, Gbarale noted that his organization actively engaged in impactful initiatives throughout the 16 days, gaining key insights that shaped their advocacy:

“Raising awareness about the various forms of violence against women is crucial. Understanding these issues empowers communities to take action.

“Proactively addressing harmful norms and behaviors through education and dialogue can help prevent violence before it occurs.

“Survivors of violence need comprehensive support, including legal aid, healthcare, and emotional assistance. Building and ensuring access to such systems is vital.

“Grassroots initiatives play a critical role in driving change. Local community efforts have demonstrated that collective action yields tangible results.

The fight against gender-based violence is a shared responsibility. Men must join women in challenging misogyny and promoting respect and equality.

Gbarale urged stakeholders and the public to sustain the momentum beyond the campaign, advocating for continuous engagement in spreading awareness, supporting local initiatives, and fostering a culture of safety and respect.

“As this campaign concludes, let us remember that the end of violence against women requires persistent advocacy and united action. Together, we can create a future where everyone feels safe and valued,” he said.

The 16 Days of Activism has served as a reminder of the urgent need for ongoing efforts to address gender-based violence and build a society rooted in equality and justice.
