Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the well-being of the state’s residents, emphasizing efforts to foster development, promote peace, and honor the sacrifices of Nigeria’s military personnel. Speaking at the Emblem Appeal Fund Launching, held at the Banquet Hall of Government House, Port Harcourt, ahead of the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day, the Governor assured that his government remains focused on prioritizing the interests of Rivers people despite challenges.

Governor Fubara acknowledged the efforts of individuals attempting to disrupt governance but maintained that his administration is fulfilling its obligations with unwavering commitment. He highlighted significant strides, including the implementation of an ₦85,000 minimum wage, the employment of over 2,000 health professionals, and expanded recruitment for the Universal Basic Education (UBE) and Post-Primary Schools Boards, which now offer 1,000 employment slots. The Governor explained that these measures are part of a deliberate focus on engaging professionals whose expertise will advance the state’s development. He also noted the awarding of scholarships to Rivers State youths at PAMO University of Medical Sciences and Wigwe University, with assurances of expanding these opportunities through the state’s Scholarship Board.

As the son of a military officer, Governor Fubara expressed a deep personal connection to the sacrifices made by Nigeria’s Armed Forces, emphasizing the importance of supporting their dependents. Launching the emblem with ₦40 million, he stated that no financial gesture could fully compensate for the sacrifices of fallen heroes but pledged ongoing efforts to cushion the effects on their families. He urged the Nigeria Legion to invest part of the funds raised in scholarships to support their children’s education. The Governor described the event as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made to preserve the country’s sovereignty and unity, noting that supporting veterans and their families is a collective responsibility.

The Governor commended the state’s security agencies for their collaboration in maintaining peace and ensuring smooth governance. He pledged continued support for their efforts, emphasizing that stability in Rivers State remains a top priority. He noted that his administration is determined to leave enduring legacies of good governance that prioritize the welfare of Rivers people, ensuring that citizens experience tangible improvements in their quality of life.

Governor Fubara also highlighted the importance of recognizing the welfare of military personnel who have dedicated their lives to protecting the nation. Speaking about his administration’s broader development plans, he explained that the suspension of the proposed employment of 10,000 civil servants was strategic, as current efforts are focused on addressing critical professional needs in sectors like health and education. He reassured the public that the general recruitment initiative will resume at a later time to ensure sustainable growth for the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Tammy Danagogo, lauded the sacrifices made by military officers, many of whom have paid the ultimate price, leaving behind widows, widowers, and orphans. He urged citizens to show gratitude by supporting the welfare of veterans and their families. Acting Chairman of the Nigeria Legion, Rivers State Chapter, ACC Kuu Aminkipo Promise, also appealed to the government to expedite the promised employment of 50 legionnaire wards and provide financial support for their scholarship initiatives.

Governor Fubara assured Rivers people that his administration is resolute in its pursuit of good governance and policies that uplift the state. He emphasized that the ultimate joy of governance lies not only in executing projects but also in creating lasting impacts that improve the lives of citizens. As the Armed Forces Remembrance Day approaches, Rivers State continues to honor its heroes while addressing present challenges with resilience and dedication to the welfare of its people.
