Rivers State workers have received their N85,000 minimum wage for November, fulfilling Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s promise to increase salaries. Public school teachers and civil servants expressed excitement as they confirmed their alerts reflecting the new wage structure.

Governor Fubara introduced the N85,000 minimum wage to ease the financial challenges workers face, exceeding the national benchmark of N70,000 set by President Bola Tinubu in July. The governor attributed the increase to the state’s boosted Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), which rose from N11 billion under the previous administration to N27 billion during his tenure.

Speaking on the development, Chukwuma Osunna, Chairman of the Nigeria Civil Service Union in Rivers State, confirmed the payment. “The governor has fulfilled his promise. As of November 27, 2024, workers have received the new minimum wage, and they are happy,” he said.

In Kano State, a similar wave of relief swept through the workforce as the government implemented an N71,000 minimum wage. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who approved the increase in October, ensured the new wage took effect with November’s salary payments.
