Rivers United Fail To Beat Sunshine Stars

Rivers United were forced to settle for a draw at the Otunba Dipo Dina Stadium in Ijebu Ode, despite dominating the match and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Timothy Zachariah scored his first goal of the season, giving Rivers United an early lead. However, the team failed to capitalize on their advantage, allowing Sunshine Stars to equalize in the second half through a free header from Promise Awosanmi.

Rivers United had several chances to score the winning goal, but they were unable to convert their opportunities. Taofeek Otaniyi’s strike in the final minutes of the game was the most notable missed chance, as his shot was easily saved by Abdulateef Ishola. The draw leaves Rivers United reflecting on missed opportunities and two valuable points dropped.

The match began promisingly for Rivers United, with Timothy Zachariah scoring the opening goal after a well-worked move involving Mathias Samuel and Ubong Friday. Zachariah’s goal was his first in the NPFL this season, and he nearly added a second goal shortly after. However, Abdulateef Ishola made a crucial save to deny him.

Rivers United continued to dominate the match, with their crisp passing and movement creating several scoring opportunities. However, they were unable to capitalize on their advantage, and Sunshine Stars nearly equalized just before halftime. Osagie Onisodumeya made a point-blank save to deny Sunshine Stars, but the home team eventually equalized in the second half through Promise Awosanmi’s free header.

Rivers United continued to dictate the pace of the game in the second half, with Otaniyi coming close to scoring after a well-executed move involving Taiwo AbdulRafiu and Okon Aniekeme. However, against the run of play, Sunshine Stars equalized from a free kick, catching Rivers United off guard. Promise Awosanmi was left unmarked in the box and headed past Osagie Onisodumeya, giving Sunshine Stars a much-needed boost.

The equalizer galvanized Sunshine Stars, and they began to gain momentum, enjoying the better of the second half. Despite a frenetic finale, Rivers United was unable to regain their lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Remo Stars has leapfrogged to the top of the table with 26 points, level with Rivers United. Enugu Rangers occupies third place with 23 points. At the opposite end of the table, Lobi Stars finds itself in the relegation zone, occupying 20th position after a 3-0 defeat to Enugu Rangers. Bendel Insurance, Akwa United, and Nasarawa United complete the bottom four, with 15 points each.

Matchday 14 of the Nigeria Premier Football League saw a thrilling series of results, with the Southwest derby taking center stage. The day’s matches yielded eight home wins, one draw, and a total of 21 goals. Remo Stars triumphed 2-0 over 10-man Shooting Stars at the Ikenne township stadium, solidifying their dominance in the regional derby. Remo Stars’ goals came from Sikiru Alimi’s penalty kick and Adedayo Olamilekan’s second-half strike. Ikorodu City extended their unbeaten home streak to five games with a 2-0 win over El Kanemi Warriors, courtesy of second-half goals from Shola Adelani and Ayomide Cole. Bayelsa United also secured a decisive 4-1 victory over Niger Tornadoes in Yenagoa.
