NUPENG Hails Resumption of Port Harcourt Refinery Operations

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has lauded the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and its Group Chief Executive Officer, Mele Kyari, for the successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt Refinery.

In a statement signed by NUPENG President William Akproheha and General Secretary Afolabi Olawale, the union described the commencement of crude oil processing and the dispatch of petroleum products from the refinery as a “landmark achievement” that aligns with the aspirations of Nigerian workers and citizens.

NUPENG emphasized that this milestone underscores NNPCL’s dedication to achieving energy independence and fostering sustainable economic growth. The union particularly praised Kyari’s leadership and perseverance in overcoming challenges to bring the Port Harcourt Refinery rehabilitation project to completion.

“This achievement demonstrates unwavering commitment to national progress,” the statement read, commending the refinery’s over 16 million man-hours worked without a single Loss Time Injury (LTI). The union highlighted this as a testament to meticulous planning, professionalism, and hard work.

NUPENG acknowledged the indispensable support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the NNPCL Board of Directors, staff, and contractors. The union described the refinery’s resumption of production as proof of the power of collective effort and shared commitment to national development.

As the refinery resumes the production and dispatch of key products such as Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and Household Kerosene (HHK), NUPENG noted the critical role it will play in addressing Nigeria’s energy challenges, alleviating hardship for workers, and fostering economic stability.

The union expressed optimism that the ongoing rehabilitation of the Warri and Kaduna refineries would follow suit, further easing the energy burden on Nigerians and stimulating the economy.

“The successful re-streaming of the Port Harcourt Refinery is a beacon of hope. We earnestly hope that the rehabilitation of other refineries will soon come to fruition,” the union added.

NUPENG concluded by reiterating its commitment to supporting efforts that prioritize the welfare of workers, energy sufficiency, and the nation’s economic growth.
