FGGC Abuloma Wins Inaugural Educational Quiz in Rivers State, Bags N10 Million

Federal Government Girls College (FGGC), Abuloma, Port Harcourt, claimed victory in the first-ever Education Champions League (ECL) quiz competition, hosted by August Meeting, a dedicated group aiming to revive the reading culture among youth in Rivers State.

This maiden competition saw four secondary schools in Rivers State sharing a substantial prize pool of N19 million.

FGGC Abuloma emerged as the top contender, winning the grand prize of N10 million after scoring 27 points in the final round. Represented by Ogbonna Joy, Nwokeji Superior, Ebere Oroma Lee, and Wehere Excel, the team not only won the competition but also claimed half of the prize money, establishing themselves as “young millionaires.”

The competition’s first runner-up, Seacrest Preparatory School, Port Harcourt, secured N5 million with 24 points. Aladumo International School and Enitonia High School followed in third and fourth place, earning N2.5 million and N1.54 million for their respective scores of 23 and 16 points.

Sixteen public and private schools from across the state participated in the quiz, which kicked off on September 21, 2024. Following several rounds, eight schools advanced to the semifinals, with four schools reaching the final stage of the competition.

The chief sponsor of the event, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs, praised August Meeting for its role in organizing the ECL quiz. Highlighting the importance of education for Nigeria’s future, Lulu-Briggs noted, “It becomes imperative [that] individuals and the government should begin to appreciate the need to take with all seriousness the education of the next generation of Nigerians. The government has no greater responsibility than to educate the next generation of Nigerians.”

Following FGGC’s victory, the principal, Mrs. Dorathy Ukachukwu, expressed her pride and gratitude for her students’ achievement. She remarked, “I am elated and delighted that my girls emerged tops in this competition.

“Preparing the girls was not an easy task, but we thank God who crowned our efforts with this resounding success.” She also reaffirmed the school’s commitment to continued success in future editions of the competition.

Representing August Meeting, Wenenda Wali extended thanks to the event sponsor and outlined the distribution of the prize money: 50% to the students, 25% to school management, and 25% for purchasing books. Additionally, Chief Lulu-Briggs announced an increase in the prize pool by 50% for the next edition, heightening anticipation for future competitions.

The ECL quiz competition not only celebrates academic achievement but also reinforces a commitment to education, aiming to inspire students and schools across Rivers State in the years to come.
