Renowned Nigerian singer, Timaya, recently shared his perspective on the Nigerian music industry, expressing that goodwill among artists is largely absent. In his view, this has always been the case, with professional relationships rarely evolving into true friendships.
During an interview with Channels TV, Timaya discussed the dynamics of the industry, pointing out that artists should not see their colleagues as friends. “Your colleagues are not your friends na. The only person who wants to see you better than them is your father or, your parents,” he explained.

Timaya also highlighted some of the obstacles that complicate collaboration in the industry, noting, “I’m not looking for anything from anybody. If Adidas can collaborate with Gucci, then what are you talking about? Collaboration, I said it a long time ago, ‘collabo follow for promo.’”
He added that, even in cases of collaboration, artists may avoid showing up for video shoots or demand high fees, stifling creativity and impacting the growth of the industry.
Acknowledging the shifts over time, he remarked, “Times have changed, you can’t blame them. Old ways cannot open new doors.” Timaya noted that artists who feel wronged by colleagues might harbor resentments, which only adds tension to already competitive relationships.
“There has never been love in the music industry, na normal thing. It’s just like in an office, there’s competition na. It’s a normal,” he concluded.
