El-Kanemi Strikes First

Red Card Drama
The first half took another dramatic turn when Gimbal Ajiji received his marching orders, reducing Rivers United to 10 men. Despite this setback, El-Kanemi showcased their resilience, battling tirelessly to secure a share of the spoils on away soil.
League Standings Unchanged
The draw allowed Rivers United to maintain their grip on the top spot with 21 points. Remo Stars, meanwhile, suffered a shocking 0-1 defeat at Heartland, leaving them in second place with 18 points.
This intense clash demonstrated the determination and grit of both teams, setting the stage for an exciting continuation of the league.
Speaking after the match to newsmen in Port Harcourt,
Rivers United Technical Manager Finidi George remains optimistic despite his team’s 1-1 draw against El-Kanemi Warriors in their NPFL matchday nine clash. Despite being reduced to 10 men, El-Kanemi held Rivers United to a stalemate.
George acknowledged disappointment, stating, “It was just one of those days that didn’t go our way, despite having a one-man advantage for most of the second half.”
Undeterred, Finidi emphasized that his team won’t dwell on the dropped points and will focus on securing maximum points in their next outing. “We’ll regroup and continue our pursuit of more points,” he declared.
George’s resolve underscores Rivers United’s determination to maintain their momentum and stay atop the league standings.
“It was not a bad game in general, but I think they came, played counter, and they got that goal. From that moment we had to step up to see how we could get that equaliser,” Finidi said.
“In the second half, we came all out. They defended deep and also tried to go to the counter. I felt we should have been a little bit of patient in the second half while playing with one man more. We could have kept the ball a little bit more to combine in that last third. The players got a little bit nervous while trying to get the second goal.
When you have that nervousness, to score a goal sometimes may not happen. We had a couple of chances I felt would have been the goal, but it was one of those days things won’t go your way to win, He concluded.
This weekend, Rivers United embarks on a lengthy journey to Lagos, where they’ll face Ikorodu City. The league leaders will travel with assurance, having maintained their top spot with 21 points from nine matches, as they hope to extend their lead at the top.
