CP Mustapha Bala Assumes Duty as Rivers State Police Commissioner, Promises Swift Action on Security

By Tina Amanda

The new Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, CP Mustapha Mohammed Bala, has officially taken office, pledging to tackle the state’s complex security issues head-on.

In his maiden press briefing at the Command Headquarters, Port Harcourt, Bala outlined his priorities, including cracking down on kidnapping, cultism, and oil theft.

Bala, the 46th Commissioner of Police for Rivers State, commended the press for their role in shaping public opinion and encouraging continued cooperation. “We’re in this together,” he said. “Hold us accountable, give us constructive criticism, and keep sharing the concerns of the public.”

Acknowledging the unique challenges faced by the state—an economic hub that often sees incidents of armed robbery, communal clashes, and politically-driven violence—Bala stated his top priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of residents.

Outlining his vision for the command, Bala stressed the importance of boosting intelligence gathering, community policing, and cracking down on unprofessional conduct within the force. He emphasized:

“Intelligence First: We are going to ramp up our intelligence operations, working closely with local communities and other agencies to prevent crime before it starts.”

“Community Policing: We need to rebuild trust with the public. That means our officers will be more approachable and respectful in their engagements.”

“No Tolerance for Corruption: We won’t stand for any unprofessional behavior or abuse of power. Officers who step out of line will face the consequences.”

Bala also expressed his intent to fight oil theft, a long-standing issue in Rivers State, by collaborating with the Navy, Army, DSS, and other agencies.

The Commissioner urged all stakeholders—traditional leaders, community heads, youth groups, and religious organizations—to work together with the police. “Security is a collective responsibility,” he noted, appealing to the public for cooperation.

In a nod to the press, Bala asked for responsible reporting, discouraging sensationalism and the spread of unverified information. “You’re my key partners. Let’s report things accurately and responsibly to keep the peace.”

Bala concluded with a pledge to lead with transparency and integrity, promising regular updates on the Command’s activities.
