Rivers United’s Technical Adviser, Finidi George, acknowledged the grit and resilience required to secure a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Akwa United in their matchday five clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

Finidi George’s post-match assessment highlighted the challenges posed by Akwa United, praising his team’s tenacity and adaptability. “It was a tough win, but we showed great spirit and resolve,” George noted.

This crucial victory propels Rivers United up the NPFL standings, bolstering their title aspirations. The win also underscores the team’s growing cohesion and Finidi George’s tactical acumen.

The Pride of Rivers secured a hard-fought 2-1 triumph over Akwa United, thanks to decisive goals from Stephen Manyo and debutant Ndifreke Effiong. The thrilling contest saw Rivers United seize the initiative in the 31st minute, as Manyo expertly converted a precision corner kick delivered by Aniekeme Okon.

Akwa United, determined to reclaim their NPFL title, fought back vigorously and equalized early in the second half through substitute Friday Apollos. However, Rivers United’s relentless pressure ultimately paid off in the 85th minute, as Effiong struck the winner on his debut, securing maximum points for the hosts.

The final whistle signaled Akwa United’s third consecutive league defeat, a worrying trend for the 2021 champions. Conversely, Rivers United’s victory propelled them to the top of the NPFL standings, underscoring their strong start to the season.

This victory held added significance, as former Akwa United players played pivotal roles in orchestrating their former team’s downfall. Rivers United’s win showcased their tactical depth, team cohesion, and determination to succeed.

With this momentum-building victory, Rivers United solidified their position as early-season title contenders, while Akwa United faces an uphill battle to revive their championship defense.

Finidi commended his opponent for putting up a good fight throughout the encounter.

“It was a difficult three points,” Finidi stated in a post-match interview.

“Akwa United came in here to fight and see how they could get a draw, so we must commend them for putting in that effort.

It’s not easy, but at the end of the day, we got those three points.”

The Rivers State Commissioner for Sports, Barrister Chris Green, has lavished praise and rewards on Rivers United, following their thrilling 2-1 victory over Akwa United in the Nigeria Premier Football League’s Matchday 5. The team received a ₦2 million cash incentive for their impressive performance.

This hard-fought win catapulted Rivers United to the top of the league table, maintaining their unblemished record this season with an impressive 13 points from just 5 matches. The decisive goals from Stephen Manyo and Ndifreke Effiong ensured the Pride of Rivers remained unbeaten.

Barrister Green’s generous gesture not only acknowledges the team’s outstanding display but also reinforces the state government’s commitment to nurturing sporting excellence in Rivers State.

Rivers United’s remarkable start to the season has set the tone for a thrilling campaign, with the team demonstrating unwavering determination and skill.

As the season unfolds, Rivers United will aim to sustain this momentum.
