Port Harcourt was jolted by two explosions in the early hours of Saturday, October 5, 2024, causing significant damage in different parts of the city.
The first explosion occurred around 3:00 AM at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Secretariat on Aba Road. According to the Rivers State Police Command, a security guard reported hearing a loud bang, after which he observed three black Toyota Hilux vans speeding away.
The blast destroyed the building’s gate, shattered windows, and ignited a fire that consumed the security post.
Just half an hour later, another explosion was reported at the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area Council Secretariat. Eyewitnesses described seeing a black Toyota Hilux van accompanied by a white Toyota Sienna minivan driving past the location. The suspects reportedly hurled an object, suspected to be dynamite, which damaged the roof and generator house of the complex.
The Rivers State Police Command quickly responded to the attacks. Officers from the Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) unit, along with the Anti-Bomb Squad, were dispatched to both sites. An improvised explosive device (IED) was recovered from the APC Secretariat, and arson was confirmed in the destruction of the security building.
The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, stated that samples have been collected from both locations for forensic analysis, and an investigation is underway to identify and apprehend those responsible. She urged residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activity.
“We assure the people of Port Harcourt that every necessary measure is being taken to enhance security and safeguard the community,” she said.
Authorities are calling for calm as they intensify efforts to maintain peace in the city following the attacks.
