Rivers LG election: Fubara’s supporters say APC will vote for APP

By Mark Lenu

Supporters of Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State have expressed confidence that the state All Progressives Congress will vote for the Action Peoples Party in the forthcoming local government election slated for Saturday, October 5.

APP is a party adopted by the governor for his preferred candidates to use in contesting the LG election after Fubara lost interest in the Peoples Democratic Party, which produced him as governor.

The supporters under the banner of the Simplified Movement welcomed the decision of the state APC to participate in the election. However, only the pro-Amaechi faction of the state APC led by Chief Emeka Beke would take part in the election.

The state chapter of the All Progressives Congress loyal to a former Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, had declared its support for the conduct of the local government election

The party also stated that it is participating in the election, adding that it has submitted the names of its candidates for the various positions.

The party made its position known in a letter to the Chairman of INEC which the party revealed in a statement signed by its state Chairman, Emeka Beke, and Secretary, Sam Etetegwung, in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

However, the Tony Okocha-led faction of the state APC had earlier withdrawn from participating in the election before a court sacked the Okocha-led state caretaker committee and reinstated the Beke-led state exco.

There are also two conflicting court decisions for and against the planned election but the governor had insisted that the election would be held as scheduled.
