Findi George Faces Former Employers Enyimba In High Stake Clash

As the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season unfolds, one of the most highly anticipated matches on match-day four is set to take place this Saturday. Rivers United coach Finidi George, a celebrated figure in Nigerian football, will lead his team into a high-profile South-South derby against his former club, Enyimba FC. This fixture is not just a regular match but carries the added drama of pitting Finidi against his former assistant coach, Yemi Olanrewaju, in a contest that has been dubbed “master vs. apprentice.”

Finidi George, a revered name in Nigerian football due to his illustrious playing career and growing reputation in management, once sat at the helm of Enyimba FC. His tenure at the Aba-based club was marked by success, including clinching a record-extending ninth NPFL title in 2023. During his time there, Finidi worked closely with Yemi Olanrewaju, a coach he personally handpicked as his assistant. Together, they formed a formidable duo that brought Enyimba back to the top of Nigerian football.

However, in a surprising twist, Finidi departed Enyimba in April to take up the role of Nigeria’s national team coach. Following his departure, Olanrewaju was appointed as interim head coach and later confirmed as the club’s permanent coach in August 2024. Since then, Olanrewaju has thrived, leading the People’s Elephants to crucial victories both domestically and on the continent, including an impressive run to the group stages of the CAF Confederation Cup.

Under Finidi’s leadership, Rivers United have made a solid start to their 2024/25 NPFL campaign, picking up seven points from their first three matches. A recent 1-0 victory over Nasarawa United showcased the team’s resilience, and they have maintained a strong presence both at home and away. Finidi, however, remains cautious ahead of the match against Enyimba. Speaking after their latest win, he remarked, “We are playing against Enyimba; it’s going to be a difficult game, but I’ve always said we will take our game one at a time.”

Despite the positive start, Finidi is acutely aware that facing his former employers will be no easy task. Enyimba, under the stewardship of Olanrewaju, remain unbeaten in their two league matches, including an away victory over Heartland, which signals their intent to defend their title. Both teams have demonstrated early-season form that suggests Saturday’s clash will be fiercely contested.

While much of the spotlight will focus on Finidi George, Yemi Olanrewaju’s rise to prominence cannot be overlooked. Stepping into the shoes of his former mentor at Enyimba, Olanrewaju has managed to carve out his own identity, quickly establishing himself as one of Nigeria’s promising young coaches. His tactical acumen has been evident in Enyimba’s solid start to the season, and the club’s success in the CAF Confederation Cup only reinforces his growing reputation.

For Olanrewaju, this match presents an opportunity to prove his credentials against the man who gave him his first major break. The narrative of master versus apprentice adds an extra layer of intrigue to an already captivating fixture.

As both Rivers United and Enyimba FC remain unbeaten this season, Saturday’s encounter promises to be a thrilling spectacle. For Finidi George, it will be a test of his ability to outwit his former apprentice, while Yemi Olanrewaju will seek to assert his newfound authority. Beyond personal storylines, the match has significant implications for the NPFL title race, as both teams aim to solidify their positions at the top of the table.

Fans across Nigeria will be eagerly anticipating this South-South derby, a match that could set the tone for the rest of the season.
