NYSC Debunks N70,000 Minimum Wage Rumours

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has refuted claims circulating on social media that it has begun upgrading corps members’ bank accounts in preparation for the payment of a new N70,000 minimum wage.

In a statement released on Saturday by NYSC’s Director of Information and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, the organization emphasized that no official directive has been received from the relevant authorities regarding the implementation of a N70,000 minimum wage for corps members. The statement described the rumours as misleading and entirely false.

The NYSC urged corps members, parents, and the general public to disregard the misinformation, clarifying that no such upgrade or payment has been authorized.

“It is impossible for the NYSC to issue any information on such matters without a directive from the appropriate government sector responsible for wage issues,” the statement read.

The corps management also advised corps members to remain vigilant against misleading information from unauthorized sources. They emphasized that official communications from the NYSC are disseminated through recognized channels, and any information not coming from these sources should be considered untrustworthy.

Additionally, the NYSC cautioned bloggers and social media influencers against spreading false information related to the management of the NYSC, warning that such actions could have serious consequences.

The rumours followed ongoing discussions about the review of the national minimum wage for public servants, which has traditionally influenced the monthly allowances paid to corps members.

However, the NYSC has made it clear that no changes have been made to the current allowance structure, and any updates will be communicated through the appropriate channels.

The NYSC’s clarification comes in response to growing concerns among corps members and the public about potential changes to their allowances amid economic uncertainties.
