In a landmark move, the Federal Government has launched a project to establish a cultural and historical center in honor of the legendary King Jaja of Opobo. The initiative, inaugurated by the Minister of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy, Bar. Hannatu Musa Musawa, in Abuja, is a significant step towards preserving Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and promoting tourism.
The project has been hailed as a milestone by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, representing Andoni/Opobo/Nkoro Federal Constituency of Rivers State, who expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for immortalizing King Jaja. He emphasized that the center will not only enhance exposure to the great leader’s legacy but also provide a platform for deeper research, showcasing the heritage of the people to the world.
“The establishment of this cultural and historical center is a dream come true for the people of Opobo and the entire Niger Delta region,” Hon. Abiante said. “It is a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to preserving our cultural heritage and promoting tourism in the region.”
The Minister highlighted the project’s significance in Nigeria’s vision to leverage the Art, Culture, and Tourism Sectors to create job opportunities for youth and contribute to the nation’s GDP. “This project is a key component of our strategy to diversify the economy and promote cultural tourism,” she said. “We believe that by showcasing our rich cultural heritage, we can attract tourists and create jobs for our youth.”
His Royal Majesty, King (Dr.) Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V, paramount ruler of Opobo, also commended the federal government for taking concrete steps to honor King Jaja, a first in the nation’s history. “We are grateful for this recognition of our great leader’s contributions to the development of Nigeria,” he said. “This center will serve as a beacon of cultural excellence, inspiring future generations and showcasing our rich history.”
Notably, the cultural and historical center is expected to immortalize the great leader, create jobs, and boost tourism in Rivers State and the South-South region. A Technical Committee has been tasked with playing critical roles in realizing the project by serving as a liaison between the Federal Government, State Government, and Host Community.

As the project takes shape, it is poised to become a major tourist attraction, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Opobo people and the Niger Delta region.
