Finidi George Swings into Action for Rivers United

Finidi George, the newly appointed coach of Rivers United, has hit the ground running, taking the reins of his first training session on Monday in Port Harcourt. This marks the beginning of an intense preparation phase for the team as they gear up for the upcoming 2024/25 season. With his wealth of experience and expertise, Coach George is set to instill his tactical philosophy and playing style into the team, honing their skills and building a strong squad capable of achieving success in the highly competitive Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). The players are eager to impress and make a positive impact under the guidance of their new mentor, as the club sets its sights on a successful campaign.”

As reported earlier by ThePortCitynews Finidi George, a seasoned football tactician aged 53, was unveiled as the new helmsman of Rivers United last Wednesday, just a week after his departure from the Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, whom he had led as head coach until his resignation last month. George’s appointment marks a new chapter in his managerial career, as he transitions from the international stage to club football, bringing his wealth of experience and expertise to Rivers United. His resignation from the Super Eagles had sparked speculation about his next move, and this appointment has finally put the rumors to rest, as he embarks on a new challenge to steer Rivers United to success in the Nigerian Professional Football League.”

“Finidi George takes charge. Our new technical manager leads his first training session at Garden City Sports Complex,” the club shared on Monday.

In the training session photos released, Finidi George was captured actively engaging with his new players, imparting his tactical wisdom and guidance as he demonstrated his coaching style. Additionally, he was seen in deep conversation with his technical staff, including coach Evans Ogenyi, who had previously led the team to a successful conclusion of the last season. The images showcase Finidi’s hands-on approach, as he collaborates with his support staff to implement his vision and strategy, ensuring a seamless transition and a united approach towards achieving success in the upcoming season. The photos offer a glimpse into the team’s preparation and Finidi’s leadership style, which emphasizes teamwork, communication, and a collective drive for excellence.

Theportcitynews reports that Although Finidi George has begun his tenure as Rivers United’s coach, he is still awaiting the complete assembly of his squad. The club is currently in negotiations with approximately 13 players whose contracts have expired, seeking to finalize their retention. Concurrently, the team is actively pursuing the acquisition of new talent to bolster the squad’s depth and strength. This dual process aims to create a formidable roster, capable of competing at the highest level. Until these negotiations are concluded, Finidi will have to work with a partial squad, presenting an initial challenge as he strives to implement his vision and build a cohesive.

Rivers United has been linked to several players in the transfer market, including goalkeepers Amas Obasogie from Bendel Insurance and Kingdom Osayi from Doma United. Additionally, the club has shown interest in striker Jonathan Alukwu from Sporting Lagos and Divine Nwachukwu, a teammate of Obasogie’s at Bendel Insurance. However, it’s important to note that Obasogie has publicly expressed his loyalty to Bendel Insurance, making a move uncertain. Meanwhile, Rivers United are also in negotiations to retain some of their out-of-contract players, including goalkeeper Abiodun Akande, captain Nyima Nwagua, and Kazie Enyinnaya, who are yet to renew their deals with the club.”

Finidi, who signed a two-year deal with the club has revealed that his immediate target is to return the team to the continent next season.

Rivers United played in the CAF Confederation Cup last season but couldn’t go past the quarter-finals stage.

They also finished eighth in the NPFL with 53 points. Which is appalling to the fans.
