Scouting Reports in the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) states that Port-Harcourt based side Rivers United FC has rejected a very lucrative offer from South African power house, SuperSport United for their top player, Andy Okpe. The 23 year old striker nicknamed “Ironman” has been a fan Favorite and has been impressive for the Pride of Rivers since joining from Remo stars for an Undisclosed fee, he had 11 goal contributions in the 2023/2024 Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) season, his performances has attracted many clubs in Europe and Africa, hence it’s is not surprising that Supersport United want him on their books.
The South African club proposed a substantial sum of $150,000 which is three times his market value according to online football value analytic website transfermarket along with a 15% add-on, but Rivers United’s management refused to accept. Despite Andy Okpe’s successful trial with SuperSport United a few months ago, in which some fans and media mistook for an official move for the “Ironman”Rivers United’s leadership decided against the transfer becoming a reality. Chairman of the Club, Chris Green affirmed the player is not on the transfer list, emphasizing the club’s commitment to building a strong team. Nevertheless, sources close to Andy Okpe have disclosed his strong desire to depart Rivers United in search of better opportunities. This eagerness from the player to explore greener pastures may exert pressure on Rivers United’s management to reconsider their stance.
Contrary to the Players alleged wishes, Rivers United want to start conserving their stars as they aim to build a team that cannot be beaten by anyone in Africa; They don’t want to be like the Ajax or Benfica of Nigerian Football, but want to build a future team and Okpe Andy fits in that proposed system as plans are to build the team around him and other stars of the Pride of Rivers.
