The Rivers State Police Command has declared Gabriel ‘General’ Asabuja, a former Niger Delta militant leader, wanted. This announcement comes in the midst of ongoing political turbulence in Rivers State, sparked by the contentious leadership transitions within local government councils.
A recent viral video showing Asabuja issuing threats has intensified the already tense situation.
The Rivers state’s Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, speaking on Channels Television’s “Politics Today,” confirmed that the video has caused widespread panic both locally and beyond. “That
video caused a lot of panic in the state. It gives a lot of concern to everybody even out of the state. I want to assure you that we are not going to take kindly to that. We have put actions in motion. We would get him at the appropriate time. We have gotten a lot of people of his kind.”
Rivers State has been embroiled in a political crisis since late last year, following a fallout between Governor Sim Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
The latest conflict centers on the leadership of local government councils. Earlier this month, the tenure of the previous chairpersons and their deputies ended, leading Governor Fubara to install new caretaker committees.
This decision has been met with fierce opposition from Wike’s loyalists, who argue that the governor’s actions are unjustified.
The police have warned against any escalation of violence, emphasizing their readiness to deal with troublemakers decisively.
“You cannot prepare a video and start firing and threatening people not to move around and do what they are expected to do in town and expect the police will fold their hands. We are working towards it. We have invited him and he does not want to come but we will do what we want to do. We are looking out for him. He is wanted. That is correct,” the Rivers State Commissioner further said.
