Abia Warriors defeated Rivers United on Tuesday at the Umuahia Township Stadium, Umuahia in a rescheduled Nigerian Premier Football League, thanks to goals from Samson Obi in the 64th minute and the last straw that broke the camel’s back in the stoppage time by Meme Okike. Even though Rivers United has been unbeaten against Abia Warriors since the year 2018.
Despite allegedly sacking senior gaffer, Stanley Eguma, Rivers United has gotten just one point from the last four away games. Rivers United had the Nigerian Premier Football League paused for them to play their games in hand from their time in the CAF Confederation Cup. But has lost to Bayelsa United, Remo Stars, Sunshine Stars, and Abia Warriors, compensating their fans with a barren draw against Kwara United.
This has led to wailings from Rivers United ultras on social media platform X, such as Pride of Rivers. Rivers United further went on X to say;
“We suffered a 2-0 defeat to Abia Warriors in an NPFL rescheduled matchday 29 encounter on Wednesday. The hosts broke the deadlock in the 2nd half through Samson Obi’s goal and meme okike sealed the win with a late tap-in.
This loss means Rivers United drops to 12th place on the NPFL log with 41 points from 31 matches. Rivers United will face Niger Tornadoes in another rescheduled Nigerian Professional Football League on Sunday, May 19, at the Adokiye Amieseimaka Stadium and then travel to the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City for a President Federation Cup round 32 clash vs Niger Tornadoes on Wednesday, May 22, at 1 pm.
Whether this season can be salvaged remains a question for the players and management.
