Bayelsa govt pledge to upgrade educational facilities

The Bayelsa State Government on Monday restated its commitment towards upgrading educational facilities at its own tertiary institutions in pursuit of quality education in the state.

The Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, stated this while receiving a report from the Committee on the Upgrade of the Faculty of Law, Niger Delta University, Yenagoa Campus, in Government House, Yenagoa.

In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Doubara Atasi, the Deputy Governor explained that the continuous upgrade of facilities at the institutions would enable them to always satisfy the accreditation requirements of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

To this end, he said government would give a facelift to the Faculty of Law, Niger Delta University, Yenagoa, to ensure effective teaching and learning as well as increase the number of law students approved for admission annually by the Council of Legal Education..

While thanking the Committee for the expeditious manner they carried out their assignment, Senator Ewhrudjakpo assured that government would look into the report with a view to implementing all relevant and necessary recommendations.

Earlier in his presentation, the Chairman of the Committee, Dr Alabo Ozubide, reeled out the recommendations of the Committee to include the construction of a befitting Law Faculty Building, hostel accommodation and additional lecture halls.

To build the Faculty Building, the Committee suggested that government should take some parcel of land measuring approximately 1,646 square metres from the premises of the Bishop Dimeari Grammar School (BDGS), Ovom.

According to Dr Ozubide, the Committee also recommended that “the parcel of land behind the present administrative building of the Faculty of Law, adjoining Gwegwe Street measuring about 7,351 square metres be used for the building of male and female hostels.”

It, however, urged government to guard against any further activity capable of reducing the landmass currently occupied by BDGS to enable the school maintain its standard sports field, tracks and aesthetic premises.

The Committee, which has the Director General, Directorate for Education Inspection and Policy Services, Ms Biboye Ogola as its Secretary, equally stressed the need for the state government to provide some employment benefits to the host community.
