The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Rivers State Branch says child labour violates fundamental human rights, undermining every community’s social and economic progress.
State Chairperson FIDA Rivers, Adata Bio-Briggs, disclosed while observing the World Day Against Child Labour with the theme: “Social Justice for All: End Child Labour,” in Port Harcourt.
She reaffirms the organisation’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of children in society and promoting social justice for all.
“FIDA Rivers recognises that child labour is a violation of fundamental human rights and undermines the social and economic progress of our communities. Child labour remains a pervasive issue worldwide, affecting millions of children forced into hazardous work, depriving them of their right to education, development, and a dignified childhood.
“As an organisation dedicated to promoting justice, equality, and the empowerment of women and children, FIDA Rivers firmly stands against child labour in all its forms. We strongly believe every child deserves a nurturing and supportive environment that fosters physical, emotional, and intellectual growth”.
Bio-Briggs said they would undertake various initiatives to raise awareness about the importance of eradicating child labour and advocating for social justice for all in further commemoration of the momentous day.
“FIDA Rivers will embark on public awareness campaigns; we will collaborate with local media outlets and community leaders to raise awareness about the consequences of child labour, emphasising the need for collective action to end this societal menace.
“We are going to engage in legal aid and counseling, provide free legal aid and counseling services to children who have been victims of child labour, ensuring their access to justice and rehabilitation.
“Collaborative Partnerships, FIDA Rivers will engage with government agencies, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders to strengthen enforcement mechanisms, promote policy reforms, and develop comprehensive strategies to eliminate child labour.
“We will organise educational programs, workshops and seminars in schools and communities to educate parents, teachers and caregivers on child rights, child protection laws, and the importance of quality education”.
She further called on individuals, organisations and government bodies to join hands with FIDA in the noble cause, as it is only through collective efforts that child labour can truly end and create a better future for the children.
“FIDA Rivers firmly believes that every child has the right to be safe, nurtured, and provided with quality education. We urge all members of society to stand up against child labour and work together towards a society where children can thrive, free from exploitation”.
