The Guild of Medical Laboratories Directors has called for an annual research summit for all stakeholders in the health sector to take stock of challenges in the sector with a view to proffering solutions to these challenges.
The guild made this recommendation in a communiqué at the end of its maiden annual scientific conference and workshop in Port Harcourt.
The communiqué which was signed by the National Vice President South-South zone of the Guild of Medical Laboratories Directors, Sule Fagbuyi, called for a more stable funding commitment and financing mechanism for both efficient emergency response and long-term preparedness.
The group raised alarm over the high incidence of cancer and called for routine screening and early detection for effective management of the disease.
They also observed that the incidence of emerging and re-emerging diseases in the country has revealed the poor level of preparedness in handling these threats to human existence and the need to equip our laboratories for this challenge and any other challenges which may face in the future.
They also lamented the multiple taxations to members and urged the government to look into it as it affects productivity and patients’ accessibility to basic health needs.
They implored members to look inwards with a view to creating a local technology for the development of laboratory equipment and consumables
The guild during the conference commended the State Governor, Nyesom Wike for the infrastructural development in Rivers State.
The statement further called for a national quality policy on healthcare industries in Nigeria to boost access to healthcare.
