Herdsmen kill community leader in Bayelsa

Fulani herdsmen have attacked and killed one Chief Bob Wilson in Okordia Akumoni community in the Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

The rampaging herders also injured many residents of the community in the invasion which occurred on Monday night.

Community sources said the invasion was over a fishing settlement popularly known as “Lake Sam” in the area.

The killing of the deputy village chief, however, created tension in the community.

It was gathered that most of the people injured are said to be fishermen doing their businesses in the area and planting okra, pepper and other agricultural produce.

Recall that last week, a farmer was hacked to death at the neigbouring Zarama community before Tuesday’s invasion of Okordia.

Confirming the incident, the Bayelsa State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Asinim Butswat, said the police had recovered the corpse while investigation was ongoing.

“Suspected herdsmen killed one man in the fishing camp there, we were able to recover the corpse, he died as a result of the bullet wound as was observed in his body,” Butswat said.
