FIDA pledge to support vulnerable inmates at Port Harcourt Prison

International Federation of Women Lawyers FIDA Rivers State has pledged to increase its continuous support in protecting and preserving the fundamental human rights of vulnerable inmates in Port Harcourt Prison.

FIDA made the pledge when the Deputy Comptroller, Maximum Security Custodian Center Port Harcourt, Effiong Etim, led his team for a courtesy visit at the FIDA center, Port Harcourt.

Speaking during the visit, Vice Chairperson FIDA Rivers, Emi Jim-George, said through its Prison watch sub-committee in collaboration with their partners, FIDA has ensured that indigent inmates are catered for and given free legal services.

Jim-George explained further that FIDA is always ready to render probono services to the vulnerable and also provide hygiene materials such as sanitary pads to female inmates as their needs are peculiar.

According to her, “As an organization advocating for the right of women and children we and our partners have over time given recommendations for improvement and better service delivery for female inmates in the correctional facilities and vulnerable children at the remand home.

“We have also developed and coordinated activities, and interventions for prison inmates; we try as much to manage and maintain a summary database of female prison inmates.”

On his part, the Deputy Comptroller Maximum Security Custodian Center Port Harcourt, Effiong Etim, said the correctional center will continue to work in synergy with FIDA through its legal services to ensure that efficient services are provided at the prison, particularly to female inmates.
