UNIPORT holds 33rd convocation, award 19,235 degrees

The University of Port Harcourt on Friday commenced the 33rd convocation ceremony for 19,235 graduates of the institution with 161 graduating with first-class honours.

The ceremony, which is a combined convocation of the 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 academic sets was christened ‘classical.’

Following the commencement, 9,536 graduands bagged bachelor degrees, out of which 161 obtained first-class honours.

Speaking at the convocation, the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Owunari Georgewill, said the ceremony was delayed due to some challenges bothering COVID-19 and the strike of academic staff which lasted for about eight months.

“The period of convocation is a period of intellectual harvest. That is when the university knows its output-the years we accept students and train them. At the time of convocation, we make our outputs, graduate students, give them certificates and awards.”

Over 9,600 post-graduate degrees and diplomas were conferred at the convocation ceremony on Saturday, out of which 1,028 graduands bagged doctorate degrees, 3,745 masters degrees in various disciplines, and about 4,926 post-graduate diplomas.
