Ahoada West: Flood turns Akinima road into death trap

Brave Dickson

The SHELL access road in the Akinima axis of Ahoada West has turned into a death trap as the 2022 perennial flood further destroyed the road.

The road is said to have been called SHELL access road as it is the road through which a particular oil field of 49 oil wells can be accessed in the area.

Though, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria had promised the people of the area that it would mobilize contractors to fix the road by January next year; the dwellers of the area are afraid of losing loved ones to the road during this year’s Christmas festivity.

You recall that in December, 2019, a fatal motorbike accident occurred on the road, leading to the death of a motorbike operator while another lost his one eye.

Eyewitness narrated that two motorbikes collided at the bad spot of the road, leading to the flaming up of one motorbike just some metres away from a popular weekly market in the area.

Speaking with our correspondent, the Paramount Ruler of JK 2 Community in Ahoada West, Chief Ekiavie Amedi
said, “the road was not as bad as it is right now. It was manageable but as this year’s flood struck it, the road is now in a sorry state.

“Only motorbikes and small cars can manage to pass on the road. Any big vehicle that tries to use the road may likely fall into the river.

“The road is a serious death trap that requires immediate attention not the January next year promise given to us by SHELL.

“We will soon enter into the Christmas festivity where our loved ones will be coming home for the holidays which will make the road to be busier than it is right now.

“We don’t want to lose anyone to the road and that is why we are appealing to SHE’LL to fix the road now and forget about waiting till January next year.”
