Rivers govt stops SPAR from holding Black Friday Sales

After the official announcement of its yearly Black Friday Sales, SPAR, one of the leading supermarkets in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has been stopped from holding the sales scheduled to begin from November 18 to November 27, 2022, following an interim injunction secured by the Rivers State Government.

In the interim order filed by the Attorney-General of Rivers State against SPAR, Magistrate A.O Amadi-Nna restrained the firm, its agent servant, and or privies from further obstructing Rivers State commissioner for Environment and his staff from assessing the SPAR facilities.

SPAR, a major occupant of Port Harcourt Mall, had announced up to 70 percent slash in the prices of groceries, electronics, clothing, and furniture, among other items.

However, following an alleged refusal of the facility to allow the State Commissioner for Environment and his directors to inspect the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) of its facility ahead of its sales, the Magistrate Court ordered that the Commissioner for Environment and his staff be allowed access to SPAR facilities.

This, the court said is for the purpose of evaluating the facility’s HSE equipment, aimed at preventing environmental harm to the citizenry.

The court injunction also retrained SPAR, its agent, servant, and or privies from holding the Black Friday Sales pending the determination of the suit.

The matter was adjourned till December 2022.
