DPO allegedly assaults pregnant woman in Port Harcourt

A pregnant woman, Mrs Vivian Charles has accused the Divisional Police Officer of Elelewon Police Division, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of physically assaulting her.

Mrs Charles said that the assault occurred at the station on Monday 26 September.

Narrating her ordeal to our correspondent, Mrs Charles said she had gone to the Police station in the company of her husband to inquire why her Uncle was arrested and detained.

According to her, on getting to the station, she interfaced with the complainant and the Investigating Police Officer (IPO) and the IPO later informed them that the DPO requested their presence and that of the complainant.

She disclosed that on entering the DPO’s office, she did not know what the complainant may have told him earlier that made him to scream at her.

According to her, while the DPO was shouting, she tried to explain to him what happened only for the DPO to rise from his seat and slapped her on the face in the presence of her husband.
She said she was tempted to retailate but was held back by her husband.

She added that her uncle who had issues with the complainant and was being detained at the police station was later released on bail. She called for justice over the alleged action of the DPO as it does not befit his position as a senior police officer.

When contacted, the Spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe-Koko told our correspondent that the DPO denied assault the pregnant woman and never slapped anybody.
