Shortly after a National Industrial Court ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its seven months old strike, an Associate University Professor, Steve Wordu has urged ASUU to comply with the court ruling.
You recall that several months after the federal government failed to reach an agreement with the striking lecturers, the FG went to court challenging the legality of the strike.
On Wednesday, the court ordered the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call off its ongoing nationwide strike.
The federal government had through its counsel, James Igwe, prayed the court to grant an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.
The University of Port Harcourt lecturer told our correspondent that ASUU is expected not to behave like politicians who don’t obey court orders and urged ASUU to obey the order first by calling of the strike.
“ASUU is made up of national and university chapter leaderships and if ASUU feels it has grounds to challenge the court order, then ASUU must first consult its chapters leadership before challenging the court ruling.
“Meanwhile, as ASUU is yet to consult its chapters leadership, the right thing to do now is to call off the strike in compliance with the court ruling.
“If ASUU sees grounds for appeal after duly consulting its chapters leadership, then it can proceed on appeal. That is what is expected of ASUU to do,” Wordu said.
