FIDA commends Rivers CP for rescuing 15 kidnapped children

Brave Dickson

The Rivers State branch of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) has commended the state Commissioner of Police, CP Friday Ebuka and his team for rescuing 15 children who were allegedly kidnapped by a fake reverend sister.

Though, the suspect who gave her name as Maureen Wechinwu had denied the allegation, adding that she runs a legitimate orphanage organisation in Aluu Community, in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state.

While parading the suspect before newsmen on Tuesday, the state police boss said, “the woman who claimed to be a reverend sister, Maureen Wechinwu, 44, was arrested and would be charged to court.

“Operation Restore Peace personnel of the command, acting on credible information regarding hideout of child traffickers, stormed Omuigwe Abuja Phase II, Aluu, in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

“The suspect was arrested. 15 children ranging from seven to nine years were rescued, case transferred to CP Monitoring Unit for discrete investigation.”

Speaking with our correspondent, the state Chairperson of FIDA, Adata Bio-Briggs said it is a thing of joy to see the stolen children reunite with their parents.

The FIDA chairperson further urged the police to go after the syndicate, working with the suspect and get everyone involved in the child trafficking arrested and prosecuted.

“The CP Ebuka led state police command has done well by rescuing those 15 children from the hands of traffickers.

“The police should spare no efforts in ensuring that all those who took part in the stealing of those innocent children are arrested and prosecuted,” Bio-Briggs said
