The national council of student union presidents has threatened to mobilise its members and students to the Federal Capital Territory for a peaceful protest if the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is not called off.
The council which comprises all Students Union Presidents across Federal Universities in Nigeria had in a letter to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, given the Federal Government seven days ultimatum to resolve its disagreement with ASUU.
Recall that President Muhammadu Buhari had on Tuesday directed the Minister to resolve the ongoing strike and report back to him in two weeks.
However, in the letter signed by the Student leaders, and led by CSUP Convener, Shuaib Yahaya, they said they have resolved to embark on the planned protest because of the strike’s adverse effects on students across the country.
Yahaya noted that many students have resolved to illegal activities, such as Internet fraud, because of idleness.
He encouraged ASUU and the federal government to approach the negotiation table and reach a solution to save the academic future of Nigerian youths.
The unions in the nation’s university system, particularly ASUU have been on strike for over five months over unresolved issues with the Federal Government.
Meanwhile, the union has also vowed not to end the strike until the renegotiated 2009 Agreement is signed and implemented
