Nigerian Asisat Oshoala won the Women’s Player of the Year for a record fifth time, overtaking compatriot Perpetua Nkwocha.
The win sees her overtake her compatriot Perpetual Nkwocha as the player with the most African Women’s Player of the Year Award.
This was the 5th time winning the award after winning it previously in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2019.
Oshoala, who plays club football for Barcelona, beat Grace Chanda (Zambia and BIIK Kazygurt) and Ajara Nchout Njoya (Cameroon and Inter Milan) to the award
The 27-year-old Barcelona forward was forced to miss the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco due to an injury.
In the Men’s division Sadio Mane also won the award for men’s player of year beating Mohammed Salah and Edouard Mendy to it. This is his second time winning the prestigious African award, and this also marks him as the fifth African player to win the award consecutively.
There were musical performances by Music star Tiwa Savage and Ivorian supergroup Magic System at the event, which was hosted by Cameroonian actress Sophy Aiida and Moroccan journalist Jalal Bouzrara.
