Police arrest suspected cultists in Delta

The Delta State Command says it has apprehended a suspected criminal, known for terrorising the Ibusa community and its environs.

The suspect, identified as Ekene Okonji, a.k.a. “galaxy”, was arrested by men of the anti-crime Patrol team attached to Ibusa Division.

A statement by the State Police spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, in Asaba on Monday, said the suspect was arrested on May 27, at about 8:30 p.m.

He said a locally-made cut-to-size short gun, and seven live cartridges were recovered from the suspect while the investigation is ongoing.

Edafe added that following the restiveness in the oil-producing Ugboren Community of Sapele council, combined teams of Policemen and men of the Nigerian army attached to 91 battalions raided a shrine in Sapele community and arrested two suspects.

According to him, “Command Raiders Operatives, while on investigation activities along Asaba-Benin Expressway in Okpanam, intercepted hoodlums suspected to be cultists.

“The suspects on sighting the team took to their heels, but the team chased them and in the process arrested six of the suspects namely: Sunday Okafor Destiny, Stephen Osamota Pius, and four others.

“One locally made cut-to-size double barrel gun, six expended cartridges and one 9mm live ammunition were recovered from the suspects.”
