The University of Port Harcourt has emerged as the overall winner of the 26th edition of the Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) Games, held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Lagos State.
The event which kicked off on Saturday, March 19 2022 was drawn to a close at the weekend as Team UNIPORT won its counterparts for the 7th time in a row.
Uniport, who were the defending champions in the games, won a total of 120 medals including 61 gold, 29 Silver and 30 bronze medals.
The host, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) came in second with 33 gold, 34 Silver and 19 Bronze medals while, Nile University, Abuja, emerged third with 15 gold, 10 Silver and 19 Bronze medals.
The former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and Pro-Chancellor of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Prof. Attahiru Jega, presented the golden trophy to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Admin), Prof. C. Ofurum on behalf of Team UNIPORT, while UNIJOS was announced as the next host of the university games, expected to take place in 2024.
In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, UNILAG, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, noted that the successful hosting of the games ranks Nigeria and her institutions among the best in the world.
He also commended the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for supporting the event amidst the ongoing strike.
Dignitaries present at the closing ceremony include were the vice-chancellors of the Uniport, Prof. George Owunari; University of Jos, Prof. Tanko Ishaya; former Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof. Rahman Bello among others.
