The national leadership of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) says it would decide on a possible shutdown of public institutions on Monday following the inability of the Federal Government to implement the agreement it signed with the union.
Recall that the union had shut down academic activities in public universities in March 2020, which lasted till December 2020 when the Memorandum of Action (MoA) was signed with the Federal Government in agreement to meet their demands, including the revitalisation of public universities.
Other demands in the signed agreement were, University Transparency Accountability Solution (UTAS) promotion arrears, earned academic allowances, implementation of the renegotiated 2009 ASUU-FGN agreement and discrepancies in the implementation of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel information system (IPPIS).
However, months after the signing of the agreement, ASUU has accused the Federal Government of failing to fulfil its side of the deal, threatening to mobilise for another strike immediately.
It was learnt that no decision has been reached on whether to proceed on the strike or not, following the meeting called by the National Executive Council (NEC) of the union on Saturday at the University of Lagos, Akoka.
Members of NEC, including ASUU leaders across campuses, had been in the closed-door meeting and have promised to address a press conference on Monday (today) to announce the resolutions of the two-day meeting titled, ‘NEC for NEC.’
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has also accused ASUU of forcing it to enter into the agreement under duress, though President Buhari had assured that his administration would ensure it honours all existing agreements with the union.
