Former interim Manager of the Super Eagles Austin Eguavoen has asked Super Eagles players to put the African Cup of Nations AFCON disappointment and focus on the crucial world cup play-offs against Ghana.
The Carthage Eagles of Tunisia defeated the Super Eagles one-nil in the round of 16 tie-in Garoua to end Nigeria’s quest to win a fourth AFCON trophy.
Nigeria will battle perennial rivals Ghana over two legs between March 23 and 29 for a place at this year’s World Cup.
Austin Eguavoen who step down as the interim coach of the Super Eagles after the loss to Tunisia to return to his role as NFF Technical Director advised the Super Eagles to turn the attention to the world cup qualifiers against the Black Stars of Ghana.
“I’m the technical director of the NFF. I will go back to my job and allow the authorities to decide (who the next Super Eagles coach will be),” he said at a post-match media briefing.
The former international defender has also tasked the Eagles to put the AFCON disappointment behind them and qualify for the World Cup in Qatar.
“I have told the boys to pick up and ensure they qualify Nigeria for the World Cup,” he said.
It remains to be seen whether the NFF will stick with Eguavoen or cement the appointment of Portuguese Jose Peseiro.
