AFCON: Nigeria to face Tunisia in the Round of 16

Desmond Iwuchukwu

The Super Eagles of Nigeria will face the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in the Round of 16 knock-out stage of the ongoing African Cup of Nations AFCON taking place in Cameroon.

The match will hold on Sunday 23 January at the Roumde Adjia Stadium, Garoua by 8pm Nigerian time.

The game will be a repeat of the 2019 AFCON third-place match where the Super Eagles pip the Carthage Eagles by a lone goal to win the bronze medal.

The Super Eagles topped group D with a maximum of nine points ahead of Egypt, Sudan, and Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria is the only team that secured three wins in the group stage of the tournament scoring six goals and conceding just one.

The team defeated seven-time Champions Egypt one-nil in their opening group D while they sink Sudan three one in their second game.

The Super Eagles concluded their group game fixtures with a comprehensive two nil victory over Guinea Bissau to complete a 100 percent start in the competition.

The 2004 winners Tunisia, on the other hand, won only one match after three games to qualify to the knockout phase as one of the best losers.

Tunisia lost to West African sides Gambia and Mali in their group F matches while their only victory is a four-nil thrashing of Mauritania in the second group game.

Nigeria has not lost to Tunisia in their last six meetings.
