NSCDC arrest 30-year-old man for allegedly vandalising transformers in Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Akwa Ibom State Command said it has arrested a middle-aged man for allegedly vandalising equipment valued at several millions of naira.

The 30-year-old suspect identified as David Utibe Okon from Okpon community in the Abak Local Government Area of the state was reportedly arrested with the stolen items in his car with number plate ABC 223LK.

The state Commandant of the NSCDC, Abidemi Majekodunmi, while parading the suspect at the command headquarters, Uyo, said other collaborators of the crime were being trailed by operatives of the command.

According to him, “We have a case of vandalisation of transformers and we have a suspect here today. His name is David Utibe Okon. We have done a first information report on the case. We have debriefed him and discovered that this was an act of conspiracy involving other parties as well.

“We accosted this vehicle through a strategic partnership with other critical partners. We are deeply concerned because the government makes provision for public utilities and some people act in an anti-social manner and destroy these utilities for personal greed.”

Majekodunmi noted that items recovered include transformers, armoured cables, a spanner, handsets and other tools used in committing the crime.

He also vowed that vandals of public utilities would not be spared, as he urged residents to take responsibility in preserving public amenities.
