Rivers CP orders immediate demolition of OSPAC detention camps

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, has ordered the demolition of all illegal detention camp facilities run by vigilante groups across the local government areas of the state.

This follows the disappearance of Chibuike Nwokedi, a 17-year-old student of Jesus The Saviour International Secondary School, Elele, who was declared missing after the OSPAC vigilante group in Elele, Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state detained him illegally.

In response to the boy’s disappearance, the police declared the Commander the of OSPAC vigilante group, popularly known as “Fucking Naira” wanted.

It was gathered that sequel to report about the boy’s disappearance by his family, detectives from the Rivers Police Command raided and destroyed an illegal centre of the OSPAC vigilante group.

Spokesperson of the state Police Command, Nnamdi Omoni, had disclosed that some members of the group were arrested when police stormed the facility, while others escaped.

Omoni said the police also apprehended and filed charges against two security guards of the school who handed the boy over to OSPAC instead of the Command.

Meanwhile, the CP, who issued the marching order to Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), Area Commanders in a management meeting held in Port Harcourt over the weekend, noted that failure to discover and destroy all camps operated by vigilante groups would mean an indictment on the DPOs.

The CP said one of the major reasons it destroyed the illegal camp operated by OSPAC in Elele, was because of several human rights violations recorded in the facility.

He also urged residents in the state to report any illegal camp sighted anywhere in the state for prompt and adequate actions.
