Players of Rivers Angels of Port Harcourt have returned to Nigeria after crashing out of the maiden edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League in Egypt.
The team crashed out of the ongoing competition on Friday after beating Vihiga Queens of Kenya four-nil in their last group B tie.
However, the result was not enough to earn a semi-final ticket to Rivers Angels as Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa failed to beat ASFAR Club in the other last group game which ended 0-0.
Rivers Angels finished third in Group B with three points as Mamelodi Sundowns and ASFAR Club finished 1st and 2nd respectively to make it to the final four.
Head coach of Rivers Angels, Edwin Okon said he was happy with his team’s performance.
Okon said he was glad the team is leaving the tournament with a better display in their last match.
“Firstly, I’m happy with today’s victory even though it didn’t come easy but I’m glad we came out of it,” he stated.
“One can’t recall the last two matches which saw us losing and being in the position we are right now.
“The team isn’t as bad as people say, it was just luck not being on our side, especially in our second group game against Mamelodi Sundowns.
“We however told ourselves that we weren’t going to crash out of the competition without redeeming our image and I’m glad about today’s achievement.
“Lessons have been learned from this tournament and we’ll be going back home to work on this ahead of the 2021/2022 Nigeria Women Football League Premiership season which kicks off next month because we still want to pick the next ticket to the second edition of the CAF Women’s Champions League, ” added Okon.
