CAFCL: Al Hilal holds Rivers United in Port Harcourt

Ugochukwu Iwuchukwu

Rivers United were held to a 1-1 draw by Sudanese club Al Hilal in their CAF Champions League first round, first leg tie at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Sunday night.

The hosts dominated the game but were let down by their poor marksmanship in front of the goal.

Yasil Mohamed gave Al Hilal the lead eight minutes before the break.

Rivers United fought their way back and equalized 22 minutes from time when Mohamed Saeed put the ball into his own net.

The reverse fixture will take place next Sunday at the New Suez Stadium, Suez.

Enyimba, Bayelsa United win in CAF Confederation Cup

In the CAF Confederation Cup, Bayelsa United defeated CS Sfaxien of Tunisia 1-0 win at home courtesy of Victory Beniangba’s 60th-minute effort at the Samson Siasia Stadium on Sunday.

The Nigerian second-tier side will face an uphill task to make the next round at the expense of record three-time champions CS Sfaxien.

Bayelsa United thrashed Guinean side AS Ashanti Golden Boys 4-2 in the previous round and were semi-finalists in 2009.

Also, Enyimba fc of Aba recorded an away victory against ASC Diambars of Senegal on Saturday.

Cyril Olisema scored the winner from the spot with three minutes left as Enyimba nicked an excellent win in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie on Saturday.

The result at the Stade Fode Wade places record Nigerian champions Enyimba in pole position to complete the job and advance to the next round after next week’s return leg in Aba.

Enyimba coach Finidi George says he is satisfied with the way his team performed in their 1-0 away win against Senegalese side Diambars in the CAF Confederation Cup on Saturday.

Substitute Cyril Olisema converted an 87th-minute penalty after winger Orok Gabriel was brought down in the box, to hand the former Super Eagles star a winning start as Enyimba coach.

Reacting to the win, the ex-Ajax and Real Betis winger said he was pleased the two-time African champions were able to stick to the game plan despite the onslaught from Diambars, especially in the first half.
