Chiwetalu Agu released from Army detention

The Nigerian Army (NA) has reportedly released popular Nollywood actor, Chiwetalu Agu from detention after it detained the actor for allegedly soliciting support for the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

In a statement by an actress, Chizzy Alichi via her verified Instagram handle, she announced that Agu has been released.

Agu was arrested on Thursday at the Upper Iweka axis in Onitsha, Anambra State while sharing bread to people, dressed in an IPOB inspired outfit.

The Army had said in a statement signed by the army spokesman, Bigd. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu that the actor was arrested for questioning for inciting the public to join the IPOB.

“Troops of the Nigerian Army(NA) have arrested one Chiwetalu Agu while inciting members of the public and soliciting support for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

“Dressed in a very well known attire of the proscribed group, Chiwetalu Agu was picked up for questioning while inciting members of the public to join the proscribed group.

“Though he attempted putting up some resistance when troops made effort to take him into custody, he was not assaulted or subjected to brutalization.

Meanwhile, Agu speaking in a viral video at the military base denied the allegations levelled against him.

According to him, “I can wear this, my vehicle is parked at the centre of Upper Iweka, this is rising sun (touching his regalia), not Biafra, not Eastern Security Network. With my education, I know the area to go, I know are not to go,” he said.

“I was buying bread, N10,000 bread, sharing them one by one, no campaign, nothing, N10 thousand worth of bread when he came. Nobody was doing demonstrations or carrying people along.”
