RSU student shot dead had a gun on him – Police

The Rivers State police command says its operatives have arrested a suspect in the shooting to death of a final-year student of the Rivers State University.

The student was shot dead on Thursday morning while having a meal on the third floor of a restaurant near the Faculty of Management Sciences.

Spokesman of the state police command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the incident is cult-related, adding that a gun was found in the panties of the killed student.

“I am aware of the incident at the state university where a student was shot dead. One of the assailants was arrested immediately. But it is likened to a cult clash. When we took the student who was shot dead into the mortuary, as we were undressing him, we recovered a locally made pistol hidden in his panties.

“So, he (victim) may not be a clean person. But the other one is being interrogated and is helping us in our investigation. They are more that were involved in that carnage,” he added, saying the police was on the trail of the fleeing assailants.

Omoni advised students to go about their legitimate activities without fear.

“We have been able to restore some level of normalcy in the school campus and the students are going about their examinations. Our men are still there”

Omoni said the state commissioner of police has ordered an investigation into the incident and directed that operatives go after the fleeing gang.
