The Centre for Basic Rights Protection and Accountability Campaign and Legal Care Advocacy Foundation has commended the management of Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology, led by Prof Franklyn Nlerum, for the action carried out on a lecturer accused of sexual harassment in the institution.
A statement jointly signed by officials of the human rights advocacy groups lauded the management of the institution for a transparent process and the judgement implemented against the accused.
They noted that the action taken by the institution against the lecturer will serve as a deterrent to other lecturers and students who may have the desire to engage in sexual violence on campus.
The statement also added that the action of the institution will boost the morale of the students who are timid to report cases of sexual harassment due to fear of the unknown.
Recall that the advocacy rights groups had filed a formal complaint at the human rights desk of the State Police headquarters following a complaint by the mother of the victim, who accused a lecturer of defiling her daughter in his office two months ago.
The management of Rivers State College of Health Science and Management Technology inaugurated a panel to investigate the allegation against the lecturer following a public outcry.
The accused was dismissed as the Head of Department, Dental Surgery Technician following the report of the panel set up by the institution.
