At the just-concluded Olympics trials in Lagos State Nigeria, he put up a great performance that brought him the great opportunity of bettering his career as an athlete and a student.

Living with a friend after his secondary school education, he said he decided to focus more on sports so he can get back to school, and this is the result of six years of hard work.

“This has been my dream to train in a good environment so I can get better in what I love doing, and also representing Nigeria at the big games,” he said.

Background

Monday Charles an indigene of Cross River State currently resident at Lagos is a product of Arenas Academy. The Academy was founded in 2016 by a group of retired track and field Athletes as promoters namely Iyere Eyieyien, Edisete Dakoru, Oluyomi Sule (National Long Jump coach) and the Late Adu Uruemu ( National youth Sprints coach) who unfortunately passed away in May 2020.

The vision was to discover and nurture talented young Nigerians with a flair for track and field coupled with their academic studies. As a measure to get these youngsters off the streets by engaging them productively. Presently the academy trains it’s program athletes by utilising the facilities at the Yaba College of Technology Sports centre Yaba Lagos

In the past few years, Arena Academy has recorded huge successes with their program athletes, thus gained recognition from the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. In 2019 they were awarded a licence to host and organise athletics meets in Nigeria.

Arenas Academy had successfully produced four of their program Athletes that had secured a placement at academic Institution in the USA on scholarship since 2018 as the next phase of the development of this set of Athletes that are groomed by the Arena Academy.

Three of the athletes (females) were admitted at South Plains Junior college in Luboch Texas from where they have graduated and moved on to TexasTech University on both Academic and sports scholarships. The fourth athlete who is a male left Nigeria in December 2020 for Tennessee USA.

The biggest success story so far is Ruth Usoro who happens to be in Tokyo right now for the Olympics. She did so well at South Plains College that she was awarded academic and sports scholarships at TexasTech University.

Onaarah Obamuwagun became the African Junior Triple Jump champion in 2018 under the able hands of coach Olu Sule who himself was Nigerian long and triple jump champion for many years. She arrived at Luboch in 2019 and has just graduated with flying colours onward to TexasTech.

The aim is to get their athletes to combine track and field with their academics. They established a good working relationship with South Plains college

Godwin Monday Charles a triple jumper is the latest product that has successfully scaled up on their
Program. He joined us in 2017 and has evolved within a few years. He just gained admission into Central Arizona College to study Liberal Arts.
