Unknown gunmen kill 6 policemen in Enugu

No less than six police officers have been killed by unknown gunmen in an ambush attack on a checkpoint in Enugu.

The incident occurred on Wednesday night along the Obeagu-Uno/Amodu – Umueze/Amechi road, of the Enugu South Local Government Area.

Standardobservers reports that the gunmen earlier attacked another checkpoint at Amagunze, and 4-corners in Nkanu East Local Government Area.

Sources said the gunmen likely came from Agbani to launch the attack on the Police officers at the Obeagu Uno checkpoint.

According the sources, the attack on the Police checkpoint lasted for over 30 minutes as gunshots rented the air, forcing residents and motorists to scamper for safety.

Resident of the area told Standardobservers that six police officers were killed while their operational vehicle was set ablaze.

The residents who spoke on the conditions of anonymity said that the gunmen also carted away the AK-47 rifles belonging to the officers before zooming off.

Daniel Ndukwe, the public relations officer of the Enugu state command of the Nigerian police said he had not been briefed about the incident when contacted for comments.

He, however, promised to call back as soon as he gets more facts about the incident.
