Gunmen burn down police station in Imo

Unknown gunmen have burned down the Orji Divisional Police Headquarters located along Owerri- Okigwe Road in Owerri, Imo State.

The gunmen operated for about 45 minutes unhindered before security operatives made up of soldiers, policemen and Air Force came to engage them.

The situation caused panic in the area as two banks situated close to the scene hurriedly shut down.

A businesswoman identified as Mrs Chinyere was shot dead in her provision stall by a stray bullet during the attack.

Another lady was also shot on the leg by a stray bullet. of vehicles.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the gunmen attacked the police station after blocking the expressway with their vehicles.

There were said to have told nearby traders not to panic.

Bala Elkana, police spokesman in the state said: “We are repelling them. The war is ongoing. There is heavy security operatives detachment to the scene. We have taken the way to them. We are wining. There is a high number of casualties on the side of the hoodlums.”
