Anambra Police Commissioner confirms attack on police station, INEC office

The commissioner of Police in Anambra state has confirmed the attack on Division B police station and INEC office in Awka on Sunday.

While briefing newsmen on Monday, at INEC Headquarters, Awka, the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Chris Owolabi confirmed that he received a distress call that Division B Police station was under attack by hoodlums, firing multiple gunshots and disturbing inhabitants in the area.

He stated that explosives were thrown into the station by the hoodlums as a decoy to distract men of the force, in order to proceed to attack the INEC office.

In his statement, he praised men of the force who repelled the attackers and proceeded to engage them in a hot chase to the INEC office.

He alleged that the hoodlums fled when they were intercepted by men of the force, abandoning the vehicles they came in.

He further disclosed that items recovered after the attack include six (6) pump action guns, three (3) Ak47 rifle, hammers, three (3) Hilux vehicles, among others.

CP Owolabi added that investigations have commenced to determine the cause of the attack and perpetrators while stating that hospitals and other spaces are being searched to fish out hoodlums who were wounded during the attack.

He enjoined members of the public to carry on with their activities while urging them to report any suspicious move they notice within their area.

He revealed that the Force is in collaboration with all the security outfits to ensure that the state is reclaimed and further urged newsmen to check facts before reporting an incident, so as not to cause a stir in the state.

Meanwhile, six (6) collation vehicles and store were razed down at the INEC office during the attack.
